You must be wondering where I have been. I have been teaching and working on freelance projects. And struggling to get a tutorial uploaded. There have been times when the tutorials were recorded but not edited. I knew I was behind and you all were waiting.
So, guess what last week I resigned from my full-time job. A big step I know! But I have full faith that this will help me bring forward new and fresh content on this blog. I am officially part of the Big Resignation bandwagon. I would like to thank each one of you for being there and patiently waiting for me to get my act together.
With life updates on the side, I would also like to take a few minutes to pray for the people of Ukraine. Times have been tough for the world for the last two years and I pray to God that we see peace now.
Today I have a rose tutorial for you. I have divided the tutorial into two parts:
Part 1: Rose petals
Part 2: Leaves and stems
As you must be aware by now that I love teaching complex subjects such as this in parts so that you don’t get confused in colour mixing and work with just a few numbers of colours at a time.
REFERENCE IMAGE
This is a composition I photographed around my apartment. What attracted me to it was the stunning contrast of pinkish reds against the bright greens. Red and green are complementary colours i.e. simply put they complement each other. And we can clearly see that here.

THE METHOD
Most of the layering has been done wet on dry i.e. each layer has to dry completely before adding another layer of colour.
Pay attention to how I move my brush and create texture on each petal with almost a dry brush.
Once we finish all the leaves and stems in Part 2 of the series we can again go back and check the overall tonal value of the rose petals and make some final adjustments then.
